After a night camping and four hours driving home I didn’t feel much like cooking so I went to Sports Bar, Maun. Officially the kitchen opens at 6.30pm on a Sunday and I arrived at 6pm, but since the staff were there it wasn’t a problem to make a couple of pizzas and some chips.
While I waited I was able to have cold beer and watch Transworld International Sport on satellite TV.
After a not unreasonable length of time, maybe 20 minutes, my food was delivered, in nice shiny silver coated pizza boxes. Very smart, but how were the contents?
This one was billed in the receipt as a 4-seasons – on the menu it was a “make your own”, starting with a Margherita base (well, not strictly a Margherita, according to pizza on Wikipedia) and adding whatever topping you like. I added chicken and green pepper. The green pepper is kind of obvious, as it is green, but the chicken is yellow, and rather blends with the cheese. Plus, by my count there were only 8 pieces of chicken. Sparse.
The second pizza was Hawaiian. This one was graced with 9 pieces of ham and 10 pieces of pineapple. Scrooge makes pizza.
Sports Bar pizzas have thin bases, and are pleasantly crisp. Unfortunately the flavours weren’t exactly inspiring and the scarcity of topping certainly didn’t help.
Service was decent and friendly, and the beer was cold and fresh. Prices are average for pizza in Botswana – about P50 each (5 pounds or 8 dollars. ish.)
As a side order I added two plates of chips, I was told that the plate was dinner-plate sized. They were served in polystyrene trays, since this was a take away order. I didn’t try spreading them on a plate at home, but if I had it would definitely have been a single-storey affair.
My normal pizza order from Sports Bar is Mexican (although the guys on Wikipedia claim it should be tortilla based, whereas mine just has spicy toppings), where it is easier to spread around the mince and chillis – it is this pizza on which I judge Sports Bar to make the best pizzas in Maun, although there is a certain lack of competition.
I will be trying more flavours in the future – watch this space.
