{"id":474,"date":"2013-06-09T16:19:22","date_gmt":"2013-06-09T14:19:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/kib_blog\/?p=474"},"modified":"2015-05-30T22:29:42","modified_gmt":"2015-05-30T20:29:42","slug":"installed-programmes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/index.php\/2013\/06\/installed-programmes\/","title":{"rendered":"Installed Programmes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Start_Button.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4088\" src=\"http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Start_Button.jpg\" alt=\"Start_Button\" width=\"224\" height=\"104\" \/><\/a>Some time ago I bought a new desktop computer for work (mainly) and spent a while setting it up just the way I like it.\u00a0 My laptop is set up pretty much the same way, some software is on both computers and some is on only one or the other.<\/p>\n<p>This is an\u00a0aide-m\u00e9moire for me as and when I may need to reinstall or setup a new machine, and maybe useful for you in finding a piece of software that does something useful for you.<\/p>\n<p>For what it&#8217;s worth, I&#8217;m a civil engineer\/project manager by day with interests in geography\/mapping, DIY, fitness, computing and listening to funky music when I&#8217;m off-duty.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll discuss the hardware in another post on another day, this is for software only.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Operating System<\/h2>\n<p>Rigged for dual-boot with Windows 7 64-bit and <a title=\"Ubuntu Linux\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ubuntu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ubuntu Linux<\/a> based on the <a title=\"Lifehacker: Dual-Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu\" href=\"http:\/\/lifehacker.com\/5403100\/dual+boot-windows-7-and-ubuntu-in-perfect-harmony\" target=\"_blank\">guide I found on Lifehacker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I do with Windows is set the Windows Classic theme with nice, minimal start menu, no transparency effects or other frippery (except for the bicycle chain background and the 3 x 1920 x 1080 monitors). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/MK_Desktop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4091\" src=\"http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/MK_Desktop-1024x194.jpg\" alt=\"MK_Desktop\" width=\"625\" height=\"118\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/MK_Desktop-1024x194.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/MK_Desktop-300x56.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/MK_Desktop-624x118.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You may also note no shortcuts or clutter: the most commonly used programs are pinned to the task-bar.<\/p>\n<p>As of now I haven&#8217;t finished the Ubuntu installation, but the hard-drive is partitioned in readiness for it.\u00a0 More details on that when I get round to it.<\/p>\n<h2>Work<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Small Business (Outlook, Excel, Word, Picture Manager, Powerpoint)<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Link to Civil Designer CAD package\" href=\"http:\/\/www.civildesigner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Civil Designer 2011<\/a> (CAD package with modules for road, sewer, water, bulk earthworks and survey data processing)<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Link to Autodesk DWG TrueView\" href=\"http:\/\/usa.autodesk.com\/adsk\/servlet\/pc\/index?id=6703438&amp;siteID=123112\" target=\"_blank\">Autodesk DWG TrueView<\/a> (viewer for CAD files)<a title=\"Link to Autodesk DWG TrueView\" href=\"http:\/\/usa.autodesk.com\/adsk\/servlet\/pc\/index?id=6703438&amp;siteID=123112\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Sokkia Prolink (links with Sokkia SET-500 total station to process survey data &#8211;
