To be honest they were a bit old&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So, Ghetto Tubless, attempt #2.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On a recent trip to Gaborone I found a bicycle shop (Cyclebase, Gaborone West Industrial, +267-3132936) and, amongst other things, bought a pair of <a title=\"Search results: Maxxis Crossmark tyres\" href=\"http:\/\/lmgtfy.com\/?q=maxxis+crossmark\" target=\"_blank\">Maxxis Crossmarks<\/a> and <a title=\"Stan's Notube Tyre Sealant\" href=\"http:\/\/www.notubes.com\/Stans-Tire-Sealant-Pint-P94.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Stan&#8217;s Sealant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Add a pair of 20&#8243; el-cheap Raleigh-branded inner tubes from a shop that will remain nameless and ready to go.\u00a0 There are plenty of resources on <a title=\"Search results: ghetto tubeless\" href=\"lmgtfy.com\/?q=ghetto+tubeless\" target=\"_blank\">ghetto tubeless<\/a>: read a few and form your own opinions on the way to go. I like the <a title=\"MTB Techniques ghetto tubeless method\" href=\"http:\/\/mtbtechniques.co.uk\/MaintananceGhetto.html\" target=\"_blank\">MTB Techniques<\/a> summary, although I did without the sticky tape and foam. The MTBR links give some good discussion on the topic, and it recurs on <a title=\"Link to results for &quot;ghetto tubeless&quot; search on Singletrackworld forums.\" href=\"http:\/\/singletrackworld.com\/forum\/search.php?search=ghetto+tubeless&amp;advanced=0&amp;exact=1&amp;posts=1&amp;highlight=1&amp;users=0&amp;located=0&amp;forums[]=0&amp;maxcount=100&amp;age=31&amp;direction=0&amp;sort=date&amp;order=0\" target=\"_blank\">Singletrack World<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 20&#8243; inner tubes, being cheap, are quite thick rubber, especially round the valve stem, so I did some surgery with a Stanley knife to thin it out a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Rims are Sun Ringle Ryde XMB (lightish cross-country\/race) drilled out previously to take <a title=\"Link to bicycle valve information at Sheldon Brown\" href=\"http:\/\/sheldonbrown.com\/brandt\/presta-schrader.html\" target=\"_blank\">Schrader<\/a> valves.<\/p>\n<p>Installation was done with a compressor to seat the tyres and the sealant was injected through the valve after removing the valve-core &#8211; about 250ml each seems to have done the job..<\/p>\n<p>Returning to this draft after a few months I can report that the tyres are still full of air, although I haven&#8217;t done too many kilometres on them: such is life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been running slime-filled tubes since renewing my acquaintance with a mountain bike in Botswana, but after a pleasant 20km ride and 4km walk decided enough was enough: time to go tubeless.
