{"id":4417,"date":"2014-08-22T22:32:02","date_gmt":"2014-08-22T20:32:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/?p=4417"},"modified":"2015-04-24T22:32:02","modified_gmt":"2015-04-24T20:32:02","slug":"home-energy-monitor-feed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/index.php\/2014\/08\/home-energy-monitor-feed\/","title":{"rendered":"Home Energy Monitor Feed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m fascinated by numbers (<a title=\"Fitness\" href=\"http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/index.php\/about\/fitness\/\" target=\"_blank\">logging my exercise<\/a>, <a title=\"Weather Station\" href=\"http:\/\/www.knottinbotswana.com\/index.php\/weather-station\/\" target=\"_blank\">monitoring the weather<\/a>, <a title=\"Fuelly Fuel Consumption\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fuelly.com\/driver\/knottinbotswana\" target=\"_blank\">logging fuel consumption<\/a>) and started logging how much electricity we use at home by reading the meter.\u00a0 We recently installed a solar hot water system and recent turmoil in Botswana&#8217;s power supply got me thinking about solar electricity &#8211; so how much energy do we use, and what do we do with it?<\/p>\n<p>After much surfing of the internet and eBay browsing I discovered the <a title=\"Open Energy Monitor Project\" href=\"http:\/\/openenergymonitor.org\/emon\/\" target=\"_blank\">OpenEnergyMonitor<\/a> project, soon afterwards there was a box of <a title=\"Open Energy Monitor Shopping List\" href=\"http:\/\/openenergymonitor.org\/emon\/guide\" target=\"_blank\">goodies<\/a> in the mail to me: a few emonTx v3s, Raspberry Pis, current transformers, temperature probes and an emonGLCD.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of months ago I managed to sort out the installation (bit of a faff, but that&#8217;s another story), and now <a title=\"Energy use at Knott in Botswana\" href=\"http:\/\/emoncms.org\/knottinbotswana\/\" target=\"_blank\">I can see how much power is being used at home<\/a> from anywhere with an internet connection (as long as Orange Botswana keeps our Flybox online and the emoncms connection live).\u00a0 The nice thing about emoncms is that you can also embed the charts in your own website:<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Running Power Use<\/h3>\n<p>Graphs show how many watts were being used at a particular moment in time, with a 1 minute resolution (subject to connection, emoncms joins the dots so a period with no readings resolves as a straight line).<\/p>\n<p>Red, yellow and blue correspond to the mains supply (we have a <a title=\"Wikipedia - Three phase power\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Three-phase_electric_power\" target=\"_blank\">3-phase power supply<\/a>), black is the combined total.<\/p>\n<p>You can zoom and scroll using the D|M|Y|+|-|&lt;|&gt; buttons.
